October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. For most organizations it passes by unnoticed, until the day someone collapses in the office, the warehouse or the lobby. Then the only question that matters is how fast help arrives.
At AED Leader, our mission is to make every workplace ready to respond. This month we want more people to know what sudden cardiac arrest is, why an AED on site makes the difference, and what your team needs to use it with confidence.
What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month?
Every October, organizations across the US come together to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The goal is simple: more people who recognize it, more people who know CPR, and more AEDs within reach.
That matters, because more than 350,000 people in the US suffer a cardiac arrest outside a hospital every year. Thousands of those happen at work. Fewer than 1 in 10 survive.
Sudden cardiac arrest is not a heart attack
The two are often confused, but they are not the same:
- A heart attack is a circulation problem. Blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, but the heart usually keeps beating.
- Sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. The heart’s rhythm fails, it stops pumping, and the person collapses and stops breathing normally.
Without help, SCA is fatal within minutes. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation lowers the chance of survival by roughly 10%. Emergency services often need 8 to 12 minutes to arrive. What your coworkers do in those first minutes decides the outcome, and only an AED can restore a normal heart rhythm.

Our October offer: a free First Responder Kit with every AED
To mark this month, we're adding a free First Responder Kit to every standalone AED ordered between October 5 and October 20, with free shipping included.
Why a responder kit?
Many organizations don’t realize that an AED alone isn’t always enough. In a real emergency, small things slow you down:
- Clothing has to be cut away so the pads can stick to bare skin.
- A wet or sweaty chest has to be dried first, or the pads won’t make good contact.
- A hairy chest can stop the pads from sticking. A razor solves that in seconds.
- Rescue breaths are safer with a barrier mask, and gloves protect the responder.
The First Responder Kit holds what you need for those moments: gloves, shears, a razor, wipes and a CPR mask. Store it with your AED, so your team never has to search for anything when every second counts. That’s why we chose this offer: an AED is the most important step, and the kit makes sure nothing stops your team from using it.
Listen: When Minutes Matter
Awareness doesn’t end after one month. In our podcast When Minutes Matter, we talk with survivors, bystanders, coaches and coworkers about the moment an emergency struck and someone chose to act. Each episode shows what it takes to stay calm and step up, and how anyone, not just professionals, can be ready.
Three steps to make your workplace response ready
- Put an AED within reach. Aim for a device that can be reached within 3 minutes from anywhere in your building. Not sure which model fits? Take the 1-minute AED Finder Quiz.
- Train your team. A short CPR and AED course gives coworkers the confidence to act instead of waiting.
- Make sure everyone knows where it is. Mark the location, add it to your emergency plan, and check pads and battery regularly.
