Gen. Eric Smith was hospitalized after a cardiac arrest near his home at Marine Barracks Washington on Sunday 29 October. He had been performing the duties of the top two marines and only sleeping for 5 hours a night prior to the episode. At the time of the cardiac arrest, bystanders called 9-1-1 and started CPR. Their quick action played a vital role in his survival and excellent progress.
